    Villa Sanddorn

    Former names: Villa Waldesheim

    Today: Pension Sanddorn

Architecture: The current building is a modern interpretation of seaside resort architecture with a reconstructed building.

    Year of construction: 1897

History/owners until 1945: The villa “Waldesheim” was mentioned by name in the 1898 travel guide “Die Insel Rügen” (The Island of Rügen) by Edwin Müller (published by Barthol und Co.). In 1905, the travel guide named C. Meusling as the owner, with 14 rooms and 2 kitchens. Six years later, in the 1911 Binz guidebook “Das nordische Sorrent” (The Nordic Sorrento), it was described as follows: Villa Waldesheim in a very quiet location, no vis-à-vis, with a magnificent view of the forest, recommends apartments with and without kitchens, as well as individual rooms at reasonable prices. Owner: Karl Mäusling. Karl Mäusling is also named as the villa owner in the 1940/1941 accommodation list. It can therefore be assumed that the Mäusling family (or Meusling, the spelling varies) ran the villa for a long time.

GDR era: The accommodation directory for the Baltic resort of Binz on the island of Rügen from the summer of 1950 stated the following: Fremdenheim Waldesheim, owner Gemperlein, 12 beds … From 1953 onwards, the Waldesheim was used as a residential building with changing owners.

After 1990: The change of ownership for the apartment building continued until 2002. In that year, the Seibold property association purchased the villa and continued to rent out the living space. In 2005/2006, Villa Waldesheim was demolished and rebuilt. The new building, with underground parking, an elevator, and typical Baltic Sea resort architecture elements, opened in 2007 as Pension Sanddorn.

Current use: Privately run guesthouse with café

Interesting facts/anecdotes: The old spire, the old foundation stone, and old door handles and floor tiles from Villa Waldesheim can be viewed in a display case in the current stairwell.
