Previous names: Villa Oesterreich, Haus am Park
Today: Villa Oestereich
Architecture: The property comprises a renovated old house and a new building standing side by side. The old building is an example of the simple construction methods of the time, a plastered brick building in the typical box shape, enhanced only by the projections of the entrance facade. Such houses, of which there are a large number in Binz, were typical of “seaside resort architecture.”
Year of construction: 1899
History/owners until 1945: Villa Oesterreich was first mentioned in a list of apartments in Müller’s Rügen guide from 1900. In 1902, Villa Oesterreich was listed in the Binz housing directory as: Owner Oesterreich, 18 rooms and 3 kitchens. The house always belonged to the Oesterreich family, who described it in a 1931 advertisement as follows: Located next to the spa gardens, opposite the beech forest, 3 minutes from the beach. Quiet house in a sunny location. Comfortably furnished. Rooms with breakfast. Large, stately kitchen apartments. Owners: the Oesterreich siblings.
GDR era: After expropriation in 1953, the house was assigned to the municipality and occupied by long-term tenants.
After 1990: After reunification, the house was returned to the Oesterreich family, who sold it to Mr. Holger Meyn in 1993. In 1997, after extensive renovation, the villa, now renamed “Haus am Park,” was reopened. A year later, a new building was added as “Haus am Park II.”
In 2018, “Haus am Park I and II” were sold. The new owners renovated both houses and gave Villa Oestereich back its name.
