Previous names: Villa Möwe
Today: Villa Sturmvogel
Architecture: Built in the style of seaside resort architecture
Year opened: 1894
History/owners until 1945: The Meyncke siblings, who already owned the Villa Daheim on Putbuser Straße, commissioned the Villa Möwe in 1893. In 1894, the house was advertised in an advertisement in Grieben’s Rügen guide: “The Meyncke siblings’ guesthouses ‘Daheim’ on Putbuser Straße and ‘Möwe’ on the beach offer a friendly welcome to spa guests and summer visitors, especially ladies and families.” In 1905, the owner was named as von Boeckmann. From around 1909 to 1920, the owner was a Miss M. Salin, who ran the Villa Möwe as a first-class guesthouse. After that, there were various owners. In 1932, the physician Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm Gebecke acquired the house, which was now called Villa Sturmvogel. He used it as a residence, guesthouse, and doctor’s office.
GDR era: In 1953, Dr. Gebecke and his wife Helga were able to escape arrest as part of “Operation Rose” by fleeing to the West. After that, the house continued to be used for residential purposes.
After 1990: In 1997/98, the Villa Sturmvogel was renovated by Gisa and Hans-Peter Reimann from Hamburg. Mr. Reimann’s aunt got the house back after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Current use: Family-run apartment building
Interesting facts/anecdotes: Paintings by Sassnitz artist Gudrun Arnold adorn the apartments and hallways of the building. While the hallways serve as a kind of sales exhibition, the works in the apartments are not for sale.
