Former names: Villa Imperial, Villa Hofburg
Today: Villa Imperial
Architecture: In the book “Pommersche Bäderarchitektur” (Pomeranian Spa Architecture) by Wolfgang Schneider & Torsten Seegert, the house is described as follows: “This six-axis building dates from the early 20th century. The two-story plastered main building is complemented on the lake side by a three-story central risalit under a high gabled roof. To the right of the converted attic is a polygonal corner tower above the upper floor with a curved dome as the roof finish.”
Year of construction: 1903
History/owners until 1945: Edmund Staub had the Villa Imperial built directly on the beach promenade. In addition to the family guesthouse with its 26 rooms, the house had a specialty wine shop from around 1908. This soon became known as the “Weinhaus Hofburg” (Hofburg Wine House). Around 1925, the house was given the name “Villa Hofburg” for the first time and was continued by Edmund Staub’s widow, Mrs. Emma von Olszynski (née Staub).
In the 1928 travel guide “Praktische Winke – Ostseebad Binz auf Rügen” (Practical Tips – Baltic Sea Resort Binz on Rügen), the Hofburg house was described as follows: “Family guesthouse. Located in front of the family baths and the landing stage. Magnificent view of the sea and forest. Running water in the rooms. Bath in the house. High, large rooms with balcony, veranda, loggia. Small rooms available for modest requirements. Recognized excellent catering. Separate kitchen for children. Meals are served at small tables. Front and sheltered back garden…“ By 1939 at the latest, Ludwig Wenninger was named as the owner of the ”Hofburg.”
GDR era: After World War II, the building was initially used by the Russian occupying forces as a command post and later converted into a residential building.
After 1990: The “Villa Imperial” did not regain its original purpose and name until 1998, when it was converted into a hotel by the Löw family.
Current use: Privately run bed and breakfast hotel
