Haus Metropol
Ostseebad BinzSchillerstraße 11
Former names: Villa Metropol, Dankwardt’s Hotel Metropole
Today: Haus Metropol
Architecture: In the book “Pomeranian resort architecture” by Wolfgang Schneider and Torsten Seegert, the house is described as follows: This building also dates from the typical period around the turn of the century. Based on old views, it is clear that this was once a three-storey plaster building that was converted into a four-storey building in the course of various expansion phases. The corner of Margaretenstrasse and Schillerstrasse (formerly Astastrasse) is dominated by a polygonal corner tower, whose portal and round-arched windows are located under curved roofs. There is another corner tower at the end of the tripartite division of Schillerstrasse. … The view of Margaretenstrasse shows a left-hand side projection and window shapes that vary from floor to floor. Framed by the avant-corps and the corner tower, there is a partially glazed wrought-iron loggia with storeys of varying heights. These loggias have been largely left in their original state over the years…
Built: Around 1907
History/Owners until 1945: In the 1909 guide book “Binz auf Rügen”, the villa was described as follows: Villa Metropol at the corner of Margaretenstraße and Astastraße, first-class spa guesthouse in the immediate vicinity of the beach, the spa house and the bathhouses. Sea view. Prestigious house, high, airy, comfortable balcony rooms with and without guesthouse. Excellent cuisine. Dining room and music hall. Electric light. Rooms from 12 to 40 marks per week. The owner was H. Faerber, who also owned the Villa Felicitas around 1911. In the following years, the Villa Metropol also changed hands. In 1925, Erich Dankwardt was the owner, who a year later called the lodging house as follows: “Dankwardt’s Hotel Metropole”. This is also how it was described in the 1933 Grieben travel guide (Volume 65 Rügen with Hiddensee, Stralsund, Greifswald, Stettin and information for motorists (29th edition). Two years later, Johannes Boyke recommended the “Metropol” in the 1935 travel guide “Praktische Winke – Ostseebad Binz auf Rügen” as follows: “Metropol” Astastrasse, corner of Margaretenstrasse, 1 minute from the beach. Well-established, quiet guesthouse and lodging house, under new management since 1934. Large, friendly rooms with sunny verandas. Good and plentiful food at contemporary prices. Car garages. Owner: Johannes Boyke.
GDR period: During the GDR era, the villa was used as a residential building, among other things. A mangle and ironing room is also said to have been in the house. From the book “Pommersche Bäderarchitektur” by Wolfgang Schneider & Torsten Seegert: Due to a fire in 1967, the corner towers were replaced by flat-roofed towers during the reconstruction work.
After 1990: After 1990, the building was extensively renovated. The villa was given its typical onion-domed towers again, and holiday apartments were created.
Present use: Holiday apartments and flats, as well as commercial space.
